What is Reel2Real?

The Reel2Real program involves interactive exercises (e.g. quizzes and challenges) designed to improve your body image by giving you the tools to think differently about social media.

Who can take part in Reel2Real?

People aged 18-25 of any gender with some body image concerns who currently live in Australia can take part. You will be asked to complete some screening questions to check if the program is likely to be suitable for you. This will take no more than five minutes. You will receive immediate feedback on your responses to the screening questions and we’ll get in touch within 2-3 business days to let you know about accessing the program.

Where does the program run?

The program is run entirely online – you can complete it wherever and whenever you like, as long as you have a laptop, desktop, or tablet handy.

What does the program involve?

The program has a range of content and activities, including videos, quizzes, and interactive content. It covers a range of topics, and we hope you’ll enjoy it! We are also evaluating the outcomes of the program as part of the research project. On three occasions, you will be asked to complete online self-report questionnaires (almost all questions are multiple choice) that ask how you feel about your body, eating patterns, and mood.

How long will it take?

Reel2Real has three parts, and each will take about half-an-hour to an hour to complete. Each part of the program can be completed in one sitting, or across multiple occasions.

When can I start?

It depends on which group you’re in. To evaluate the program properly, one group will be able to start the program straight away, and one group will be able to start the program three months after signing up. We will let you know which group you’ve been put in once you’re registered with the program.

Does it cost anything to take part?

No, Reel2Real is completely free.

Do I have to be part of the research to access Reel2Real?

Yes. At this stage, Reel2Real is only available through the research project.

What do I gain from participating?

Taking part in Reel2Real will help you to gain a different perspective on using social media. Importantly, this will assist you to feel better about your body image and mood.

Will you share any of my personal information?

No. Reel2Real takes place on a secure website, and we will not share your personal information with any third parties. The information you provide from the questionnaires and in your responses to the activities in Reel2Real will be used to summarise the effect of the program, but none of your responses will be identifiable. Your responses will be kept entirely confidential. The summary of the effects of taking part in the program may be published in peer-reviewed academic journals, or in the popular press, and presented at academic conferences. No individual information will be used, and no identifying information will be published or presented. All information will be kept strictly confidential. Will the research team know who I am? You can log into Reel2Real using an email… so you don't need to use your real name on the online program… You will however, need to use your real name to agree to be part of the research. That information will be collected separately from the Reel2Real website.

Who are the people behind Reel2Real?

Reel2Real is run by Dr Siân McLean and Dr Joanna Doley from Victoria University in Melbourne. Associate Professor Rachel Rodgers from Northeastern University in Boston, USA and Emeritus Professor Susan Paxton from La Trobe University in Melbourne are also involved. The web app is produced by SooMediaLabs (SML), Melbourne.
